In The Eye Of The Tigers

With 23 year old fireballer, Joel Zumaya on the shelf, having to undergo surgery on his throwing arm, the Tigers are looking for a replacement.

ESPN documented that Zumaya was in the attic of his parent’s home, trying to retrieve items from his father’s attic in California during the time of the wildfires when a heavy box landed on Zumaya and seriously injuring the pitcher and his throwing arm.

Best case scenario seems to be that Zumaya will return mid-season, however it is unknown exactly how long it will take for his recovery to take and if the Tigers will be getting the same smoke throwing, Zumaya that they know who just lays back an fires, blowing away the best of hitters, seemingly with ease.

ESPN Insider reports that Octavio Dotel seems to have caught the eye of the Tigers.

Dotel, 33, could be a nice replacement but can be a risky signing.

The Yankees had signed him in 2005 knowing he was going to undergo Tommy John Surgery hoping he could help the team in the 2006 season.

In 2006, Dotel only pitched 10 innings in 14 games, posting a 10.80 ERA in his limited time in pinstripes.

The Yankees let Dotel walk where he signed a one year deal with the Royals and was traded to the Braves.

Dotel however was sidelined with both teams – with an oblique strain and then a shoulder strain.

Dotel seems to be one of those players who are extremely capable to play but are mired by chronic injuries.

The Tigers had reportedly also looked into another ex-Yankee during around the trade deadline last season.

This player is 31 year old Kyle Farnsworth.

Farnsworth was a former Tiger and like Zumaya is a hard thrower, hitting the upper 90’s on a consistent basis.

However, Farnsworth hasn’t had the success Zumaya has had since Farnsworth signed with the Yankees, posting a 4.36 and 4.80 ERA in the Yankee uniform.

Two season ago, in Zumaya’s rookie year, Zumaya posted a mere 1.94 ERA, while posting a 4.28 ERA last season in limited action due to a middle finger strain that put him on the DL for about two and a half months.

It was rumored however that with the Yankees battling for the Wild Card, did not want to trade Farnsworth to the Tigers - a team that they were contending against for a playoff birth.

Maybe the Tigers will revisit that possibility or maybe the Yankees will remain firm on their stance and not trade him back to Detroit.

While Farnsworth can be flat out dominant at times, the Yankees however surely want to rid themselves of him and his inconsistency and may be willing to give him up for the right price.

However, only the Yankees know how steep that price would be in a thin pitching market and to a team who everyone knows needs a replacement set-up man for Zumaya.

Some other high profile free agent relievers that the Tigers may take a look at could consist of LaTroy Hawkins, Troy Percival, David Riske, or if the Tigers really are gamblers, could try signing Kerry Wood.
