Bonds May Not Be A Saint But He Can Be An Angel

Barry Bonds may not be considered any type of angel off the field between his shaky relationship with the media and fans as well as steroid allegations that will haunt him for the rest of his career; however, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim may be the best fit for both the Angles and Bonds alike.

Bonds has said he wishes to continue his career and needs to play another season in order to reach a plateau he made known was a desire for him; to become the next member of the prestigious 3,000 hit club, as he is a mere 65 hits shy of joining.

He is also just 38 homeruns shy of 800 on his career to enhance his lead as all time MLB Homerun King. Last season he managed to jolt 28 of them, so 38 more may not be totally out of the question for a man who in 2001 took a strangle hold on the single season homerun record with 73 bombs.

Bonds is also just a mere four RBI’s short of 2,000 for his career to add to his never ending resume.

The Angels on the other hand know and have been showing interest in power hitters that can protect their key hitter, Vladimir Guerrero, looking at two of baseball marquee third-basemen, whether to trade Miguel Cabrera or deal with Scott Boras and sign Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez will command about $30 million a season but that appears to be a moot point as it he is headed back to the Yankees anyway. Cabrera will cost them some extremely talented prospects as the Marlins like Boras are trying to over sell their star player commanding unreasonable amounts of money or in Cabrera’s case, talent in exchange for the player.

Bonds however remains unsigned. He is a former eight time gold glove winner but with his age and bad knees he can find a comfy spot in the American League as a DH.

Bonds can also spell another aging superstar, Garrett Anderson a few days in the outfield letting Anderson either DH himself or just take a day off.

While Anderson and Bonds can keep each other fresh and healthy, Bonds will not cost the Angels any prospects or demand anywhere near the amount of money Rodriguez will.

Saving prospects are always at an utmost importance for every team whether they are being groomed to take over at a position on the twenty-five man roster or using them as trade bait.

If the Angels were to trade for Cabrera, the Angels would have to relinquish some of their biggest blue chippers for Cabrera’s services.

Saving money is also obviously very important as this is not just a game, but a business as well. Signing free agents as cheap as possible is always important but is more important than ever for the Angels this off-season as Guerrero will be a free agent at seasons end.

As Guerrero as the Angel’s premier player, they would like to bring him back as cheap as possible which is something that signing A-Rod does not provide them as Boras is trying to get Rodriguez yet a new record setting salary.

So, maybe Bonds doesn’t have the greatest reputation following him and is up in age but Bonds can still swing the bat with the best of them. Bonds aside from his documented power is a career .298 hitter with a .444 OBP.

Bonds and the Angels just may be match made in Heaven.
