Interleague Play Claims Victim: Wang Possibly Done for Season

Yesterday, Chien-Ming Wang laid down an unsuccessful bunt during an interleague game. The Astros were able to get the force play but Wang beat out the relay to stay clear of the double pay.

This is a play that the Yankees now would have surely wished he was thrown out to end the inning as he injured himself on a scoring play that can claim the rest of the season for Wang.

With two outs Derek Jeter hit a ball through the right side of the infield scoring two; the second of the two runs being Wang.

It doesn't seem like anyone is one hundred percent sure where the slip occured but Wang hurt his foot somewhere between third base and home.

Wang hobbled home to score, in obvious pain. After he crossed the plate he just bent over with his hand on his thighs.

According to Yankees.com, Wang has been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament of the right foot as well as a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon, also of the right foot.

It is said that the righty will have to wear a protective boot and use crutches for about six weeks.

Whether for six weeks or the rest of the season the Yankees will likely have to look for another option, whether for the short or long term.
Wang will not be easy to replace as the the Yankees ace has had two consecutive seasons with 19 wins and was 8-2 this season with a 4.07 ERA before the injury.

In the short term Dan Giese has done a nice job for the Yankees. After a nice campaign in the minors the Yankees called him up to take up innigs as Joba Chamberlain was bieng stretched out.

Giese has made three appearances, pitching seven and a third innings allowing just one run. In his appearances he has allowed six hits, one walk and has K'd four.

The Yankees have a slew of young starters they can also pick from still in their minor league system such as Jeff Marquez, Daniel McCutchen, Mark Melancon, Jeff Karstens and even Kei Igawa - just to name a few possibilities.

Depending on what the teams would want in return and maybe whether the Yankees could get an extension on their contracts, C.C. Sabathia may be a trade possibility with the Indians woes and Joe Blanton of the Athletics who the Yankees and many other teams showed interest in even before the season began.
